Not the typical words you might hear before a packed amphitheater of restless, angst-ridden teens. But then again, this is not your typical American rock concert.
This is Creationfest, a four-day Christian rock show-cum-revival held every summer at the Gorge amphitheater in George, Washington where religion, politics, and music collide. It is here that thousands of eager young Christians gather to worship, save souls, and get “Crunk on Christ”.
These are the Jesus Freaks of the 21st century.
Born from the Jesus Movement of the 1960’s, the term “Jesus Freaks” was popularized by the anti-establishment San Francisco hippie culture who tuned in, turned off, and found Jesus. Today, a new generation of young Christians are embracing the Jesus Freaks label but to the beat of a louder drum – rock n’ roll.
But what is Creationfest all about? Is it a legitimate form of expression for today’s spiritually depleted youth? Or, is it a sophisticated marketing tool designed to make Christianity more palatable to a fickle and distracted generation of wayward souls?
